Ali Wells, Executive Management

PGA Professional Ali Wells discovered a passion for executive management in her career along a different path. After graduating from the PGA Golf Management University Program at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs, Wells had experience working at a variety of traditional green grass facilities. After moving to Florida to work at the PGA Center for Learning & Performance in Port St. Lucie, Wells discovered she had a passion for helping her fellow PGA Professionals.

“I was really impressed by what was going on with player development and other things behind the scenes that were helping PGA Professionals grow the game,” Wells says. “I discovered my path was helping tee things up from the PGA side of things, and I saw there was a need for dedicated, passionate people to serve the PGA of America.”

Wells was looking for ways to help facilities improve their player development efforts when she saw there was an opening at the Gateway PGA Foundation to help with efforts to grow the game. She accepted the position in 2012, working through different positions in player development and youth golf before moving up to oversee operations for the Gateway PGA Section and becoming Executive Director of the Section at the start of this year.

As she worked her way up to Executive Director, Wells took stock of her skills and worked to take advantage of educational opportunities inside and outside of golf. In addition to becoming TPI certified, she attended local and national PGA governance meetings and education seminars, networking extensively with other Section and PGA Headquarters staff members. She also joined Toastmasters, an international public speaking group, to improve her presentation and leadership skills.

“The quote I really embraced was, ‘Get comfortable with being uncomfortable,’” Wells says. “You don’t often stumble into success or the ultimate job. You put yourself in situations to learn and stretch yourself out, and that’s how you make strides toward the job you desire.”
